We're three debates in. Where is the national imagination? Where should the national imagination be? How will we choose our nominee?
FEATURING work by
Artists to be announced this fall!
What we're looking for:
Short performances of varying types (theater, music, poetry, puppets, etc) that provoke conversation on the questions above.
Pieces must be shorter than 10 minutes and require minimal tech.
Political specificity is great. Pieces often feature video or sound of actual candidates, or have actors playing them. Just be mindful, if you are going to put words in candidates' mouths, please make it crystal clear if you are quoting them or if you are parodying them. We want to clarify and illuminate, not confuse nor mislead.
Around Labor Day - lineup finalized
Two weeks before - Title, crediting, and technical needs are clear (so that we can create an order of show)
The week before - Social media blitz!
The day of, 5pm - We get into space, start setting up ASAP
5:30pm - Begin teching pieces that need it
7pm - Doors open, welcome audience
7:15pm - First performance starts (we usually do 2 or 3 acts, with intermissions between)
9:45pm - Show is complete
10pm - Begin gently saying goodbye to audience, start cleanign
10:30pm - Get the audience out. Heavy cleaning.
11pm - We must be out of space.
The DeBATES 2020
Staged adaptations of the 2020 Presidential Debates. Coming September 2019.
All expenditures for The Debates are paid for by Theater in Asylum. No action, script line, voting guide, or event is authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. Theater in Asylum does not endorse any candidate in this race. We simply want more people, people like you, to engage and participate. While many moments in our shows are mimicked alongside video (our way of quoting) others are departures meant to serve only as parody and satire. No copyright infringement, defamation, libel, or slander is intended. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email us. Please don’t sue us!
