The first debates are just two weeks away. Where is the national imagination? Where should it be? Who will be in the debates? How should they prepare? What should be asked of the candidates at the first debate? Who is running, who should be running?
We're pulling together an evening of short performances (theater, music, poetry) that provoke conversation about the questions above.
Each piece should be:
Shorter than 10 minutes
Address one or multiple of the questions above
Involve minimal tech
Hold itself to a high factual standard (parody is fine but make all fictional elements clearly fictional)
Schedule of the night: 5pm - Artists arrive, begin setting up and teching each piece 7pm - Doors open 7:30pm - Performances begin 9:30pm - Performances end 10pm - Start gently kicking people out, begin cleaning 10:30pm - Goodbye audience, really this time! Clean, clean, clean. 11pm - All of us must be out of space.
The DeBATES 2020
Staged adaptations of the 2020 Presidential Debates. Coming September 2019.
All expenditures for The Debates are paid for by Theater in Asylum. No action, script line, voting guide, or event is authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. Theater in Asylum does not endorse any candidate in this race. We simply want more people, people like you, to engage and participate. While many moments in our shows are mimicked alongside video (our way of quoting) others are departures meant to serve only as parody and satire. No copyright infringement, defamation, libel, or slander is intended. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email us. Please don’t sue us!
